Turn on the news and stories about vehicle, motorcycle and bicycle safety dominate the headlines. Often, information about 'pedestrian safety' is sadly absent from much of the news we consume on a daily basis. As summer descends on the NoCo region, more and more 'pedestrians' will be out and about on and near our roadways, intersections, sidewalks and neighborhoods. What better time to take a longer look at the topic of pedestrian safety.
Let's start with a few facts regarding pedestrian safety, courtesy of The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA estimates ... "on average, a pedestrian is killed every two hours and injured every seven minutes." And that ... "fourteen percent of all traffic fatalities and an estimated 3 percent of those injured in traffic crashes were pedestrians."
The key to pedestrian safety is awareness. Thankfully, the NHTSA has developed an entire program focusing on pedestrian safety. They call it ... 'Everyone Is A Pedestrian'. Their newly launched website provides consumers with a host of detailed safety content including; Safe Walking Tips, Pedestrian Safety Research & Statistics, Curriculum & Resources and Programs & Activities. We invite you to check out this awesome safety resource and join us in an effort to raise awareness for pedestrian safety and reduce the risk to pedestrians throughout the NoCo region.
